Small Talk: Inside Stories from a Stamp Designer

Have you recently sent a birthday card, wedding invitation, or mail-in ballot? First-generation American, Antonio Alcalá ‘83 ‘85 MFA, talks about his journey from San Diego to New Haven to Washington, DC, where he has art directed or designed over 60 postage stamps for the United States Postal Service. From commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and All-star baseball player Yogi Berra to LGBTQ activist and politician Harvey Milk, Antonio will share inside stories of how these miniature artworks are created.
Antonio Alcalá ’83, ’85 MFA graduated from Yale with a BA in history and from the Yale School of Art with an MFA in graphic design. He opened Studio A in 1988, winning awards of excellence from design institutions including AIGA, Print, Communication Arts and Graphics. His clients include the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, The Kennedy Center, and other museums and arts organizations. He has also taught design as adjunct faculty at the Corcoran College of Art + Design and Maryland Institute College of Art. Antonio also served on the Postmaster General’s Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee from 2010 until 2011, when he left to become an art director for the U.S. Postal Service’s stamp development program. Antonio’s work and contributions to the field of graphic design were recognized with his selection as a 2008 AIGA DC Fellow. His work is represented in the AIGA Design Archives, the National Postal Museum, and the Library of Congress Permanent Collection of Graphic Design.
Irma Mejia ‘06 is a communications professional based in Los Angeles. A master storyteller, she believes in the power of narratives to bridge ideas and bring people together. In her spare time, she supports issues of social justice, historic preservation, and access to the arts.
